Sample Problem

The oxidation of acetyl-CoA to two molecules of CO2 involves the transfer of four electron pairs to redox coenzymes.

a. Identify the citric acid cycle reactions that involve these electron transfers and the redox coenzyme in each case.

isocitrate dehydrogenase - NAD+

a-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase - NAD+

succinate dehydrogenase - FAD

malate dehydrogenase - NAD+

b. For the first redox reaction in the citric acid cycle, draw the structural formulas of the reactants, intermediates, and products and show, using curved arrows, how the electrons are transferred.
