Sample Problem

Consider the following molecule:

a. Give the complete name for the carbohydrate portion of this molecule.

O-b-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 Æ 4)-O-b-D-N-acetylglucopyranosyl-(1 Æ 4)-O-b-D-N-acetylglucopyranosyl-(Asn)

b. How many moles of IO4- would be consumed by the carbohydrate portion of this molecule and would formic acid be produced?

Two moles of IO4- would be consumed and formic acid (formate) would be produced.

c. How many moles of methyl iodide would be needed to exhaustively methylate the carbohydrate portion of this molecule?

Eight moles of CH3I would be needed to exhaustively methylate the carbohydrate portion of this molecule.

d. Show where b-galactosidase would cleave this molecule.

The enzyme b-galactosisase would cleave after the 1st saccharide unit from the left.
