Sample Problem

Draw the structure of the starting polysaccharide.

a. Exhaustive methylation followed by hydrolysis yields three moles of 2,3,6-tri-O-methyl-D-glucopyranose.

There are 1 Æ 4 glycosidic bonds present in the starting polysaccharide.

b. Periodate oxidation consumes 3 moles of IO4-, but no formic acid (formate) is generated.

There are no free anomeric carbons; all are linked, which suggests the presence of a ring structure.

From the above information we have either a or b linkages present and the resulting structure appears as follows:
